CONSTABLE FAREWELLED

GATHERING AT POLICE STATION. A pleasant function took place at the Mastertoll Police Station yesterday afternoon, when members of the local force gathered to honour Constable A. L. Downes, who is to be married shortly and is being transferred to-Welling-ton. In making the presentation of a crystal salad bowl and service, and a crystal vase, Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett expressed regret at losing such a capable and popular officer, and expressed the wish that he would carry on with his good work in Wellington. Constable C. H. Reardon referred to the pleasure it had been for those associated with Constable Downes during his stay in Masterton and extended to him the best wishes of the local members of the force. Constables A. H. Hill, R. Berry and F. Diggle also referred in eulogistic terms to Constable Downes’s capabilities as an officer, and wished him many years of happy married life. Mr J. R. Fairburn, speaking on behalf of the Court staff, extended good wishes to Constable Downes and referred to the cordial relations which had existed between Constable Downes and the Court staff. Constable Downes thanked everyone for their kind remarks and stated that his association with Masterton had been an extremely pleasant one.
