CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE COMPETITION ‘WINNERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The members of the Carterton Women’s Institute met yesterday when Mrs H. Knutson presided over cq fair attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of "The Ode to Friendship" and the Aspiration followed by tne Prayer for Peace. The president referred to the death of Mr F. W. Joblin, husband of the president of the Wairarapa Federation, and a letter was received expressing appreciation of the sympathy extended to Mrs Joblin in her bereavement. A letter was received from the N.Z. Institute for the Blind thanking the members for the assistance gix en in respect of the sale of basketware at the recent P. and A. Show and afterwards. An invitation was received to the dance to be held under the auspices of the Kopuaranga Women’s Institute to celebrate the fifth birthday on February 20. An invitation was extended to four members of the institute to attend the fourth birthday of Parkvale Women's Institute on February 21. A letter from the Wairarapa Federation was read notifying that the annual meeting of the Federation would be held in Masterton on April 24, and asking for nominations for the executive of the Federation. It was decided to nominate Mrs Joblin for the position of president and Mrs D. Adams (Parkvale), Mrs Ross Gallon (Matarawa. Dalefield), and Miss Wolters (Carterton) for the committee. After some discussion it was decided that a visit should be paid by members to the Exhibition on Tuesday. February 20. Anyone wishing to be a member of the party should notify Mrs A. L. Knutson as soon as possible. The results of the competitions are as follow:—Child’s tub frock and bloomers: Mrs S. Rooney, 1; Mrs A. L. Knutson, 2; Mrs W. S. Steven. 3. Cream puffs: Mrs A. L. Knutson, 1. Nominations for the committee for the year 1940-41 must be in the hands of the secretary on or before February 28. Mrs W. J. C. Wells gave a very interesting account of her recent trip to England and the Continent which was very much enjoyed and at the conclusion she was thanked and presented with a shoulder spray. Mrs D. Adams and Mrs B. Renall were visitors and judged the competitions. Each received a shoulder spray. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. BOWLING CARTERTON V. FEATHERSTON, j The following rinks will represent: Carterton in the Booth Cup games on Saturday next: — At Carterton: Smith. Underhill, Harp. Barber (s); Callender, A. Thompson, R. Thompson, Tucker (s). At Featherston: Harrington, V/. Steven, Geo. Hart, Sorensen (s); Bain, DeLacey, Simmonds, Hughan (s). Shield at Carterton: Newbould, Matson. Earr, Stent (s). CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. Last evening a game in the club champion pairs was played. Despite the unfavourable weather some good heads were played. In the absence of Beale, Kilmister skipped the team and A. Thompson played as substitute. The game resulted in favour of Kilmister by 29/18. Beale will now play the final against either Riggs or 'Harp. This brings al the games within reach of finality before the Centre fixtures are played. The Carterton rink which played in lhe public service tournament at Wellington yesterday lost their first game and then went on to win three games and make a draw of another. In the play-off for a place in the semi-final they were defeated by 3 points. The team consisted of Messrs Boyne, Harrington, Simmonds and Riggs (s). Personal. Mrs A. W. Petherick, of Lower Hutt, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. Mr C. Holland, who underwent an operation in the Napier Public Hospital, is doing as well as can be expected. Mr Holland was on holiday (iuring the Christmas season when he was taken ill. Mrs Teal, who is 92 years of age. and who recently underwent an operation in Croydon Hospital, is reported to be improving. Ahiaruhe-Ponatahi Sports. Everything is in readiness for the annual sports gathering of the Ahia-ruhe-Ponatahi Sports Club. As the gathering is being looked forward to with considerable interest, a large attendance is expected. The programme includes horse and pony events, dancing. pining, baby show, sheaf-tossing, and pillow fights. Already a number of side shows, including a merry-go-round, arc on the ground, and given fine weather a good day's outing is assured. Church Service. English Church services will bo conducted by the Rev. W. F. Stent on Sunday next at Gladstone at 11 a.m. and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. The usual services will be hold at die Presbyterian Church on Sunday, and at 2.45 p.m. a service will bo hold : t West Taratahi. The Rev. W. I. Couling wdl be the preacher.
