NEUTRAL SHIPPING
DESTRUCTION BY GERMANS FRENCH MINISTER GIVES FIGURES. TONNAGE OF 1.144.957 SUNK. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. February 7. The French Minister of Blockade, M. Pernot, revealed that since the outbreak of the war the Germans have destroyed 319 neutral ships, of a tonnage of 1,144.957. amounting to 1.6 per cent of the world tonnage of shipping. On February 6 there were 30 neutral ships in the United Kingdom contraband control bases, of which 21 had .been there for five clays or less. During the week ended February 3, the contraband committee considered the cargoes of 114 ships which had arrived since January 28 and 22 from the previous week. The entire cargoes were released in 90 of the cases either on the first consideration or after inquiries. Sixty-three cases were dealt with under the system of advance copies of the cargo manifests, and in 52 such cases the vessels were released subject to a formal checking of the original manifests.
