GREYTOWN
THE CENTENNIAL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) presided over, a good attendance at a meeting of the Centennial Celebration Committee which was held in the Council Chambers last evening. The action of the executive in securing the services of the Trentham Military Band was confirmed. Mr J. F. Thompson reported that the Pageant Committee had fixed the site in the Memorial Park. A Maori party had been arranged for and the cavalcade of the past century would be enacted.
Mr N. F. Skeet agreed to arrange for the scene of the first farming. . The offer of Messrs Garrity Bros and Feast Bros to supply the latest farming impliments was accepted with thanks.
Mr W. A. Tate offered to make arrangements for the fruit industry exhibit.
The school exhibit was left to the Headmaster to arrange.
Mr T. Tully reported that matters inconnection with the sports display had been completed, and Mr S. Brice offered to assist. The early footballers will be represented by one of the first Wairarapa representatives. The cavalcade of transport will be brought’to a conclusion bj' a display of aeroplanes.
The fire Brigade Superintendent reported that the brigade would co-op-erate. and the old appliances would be on display. Mr N. Langford advised that the Boy Scouts would co-operate and also act as messengers.
Mrs Horton reported that the ladies’ committee had completed arrangements for the pioneer luncheon. Mr Farley, chairman of the Works Committee, stated that the Borough staff would assist in preparing the Park.
Mr H. C. Trotman offered to supply timber for the staging.
The speakers at the opening of the Rest Room will be the Mayor, Mrs Beu (president of the Greytown W.D.F.U.), and Mr W. A. Tate. The official opening will be conducted by a Government representative. It was decided to ask the Automobile Association to arrange transport for early settlers to the Pageant. The Pageant Committee will meet again on Monday evening.
The providing of luncheon for the Band was left to the Greytown branch of the R.S.A., who will bear the cost of the same. Bowling. Playing for the Dennes Gold Medal H. J. Nightingale (holder) defeated T. Connolly by a big margin. Personal. Mrs R. Pickard is visiting Hastings.
