BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Booth Cup match between Carterton and Featherston clubs will be played on Saturday next. Club championship games were played on the Carterton green last evening with the following results: Champion single: Sorensen defeated A. Thompson 19/9. The result of this game leaves three players still in the contest. Barber will play Hart, the winner of which will meet Sorensen for the singles title. Considerable interest is being taken in the result of the next games. Progressive pairs: A. Thompson and Robertson (s) beat McCarty and Harrington (s) 27/26; Boyne and Callender (s) beat McCarty and Hughan 23/22; Newbould and, DeLacey (s) beat Hawker and Robertson s) 21/19. COUNTY ELECTION An election was held yesterday to fill the vacancy on the Wairarapa County Council caused by the death of M F. W. Joblin. The poll resulted in the return of Mr J. K. Strang. Peacock presided over a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute held in the Parkvale Hall yesterday afternoon.

The meeting was opened with the Ode to Friendship and the Aspiration. An invitation was received from the Kopuaranga Women’s Institute to attend the fifth birthday dance. The invitation was accepted with thanks. Arrangements were made for the annual birthday meeting of the Institute to be held on Wednesday, February 21. It was decided to send four invitations to each Institute in the district.

Mr E. H. Hawker, of Carterton, gave an interesting talk on gardening, and at the conclusion answered a number of questions. Mr Hawker also judged the flower competitions. Mrs Hawker also was present and judged the cooking and sewing events. Mr and Mrs Hawker were accorded votes of thanks. The monthly competitions resulted as follows: —Seniors: Ginger bread, Mrs C. Jensen 1, Mrs W. King 2, Mrs B. Renall 3. Best bloom, Mrs R. Williams 1, Mrs L. Rayner 2, Mrs G. W. Hart 3. Juniors: Worked guest towel, Miss J. Warrington I, Miss S. Rayner 2. Miss E. Brassel 3. Best bloom, Miss J. Warrington 1, Miss A. Williams 2, Miss L. Rayner 3. A competition arranged by Miss M. Adlam '.was won by Mrs L. Nolan. Another competition arranged by Miss E. Brassel was won by Miss H. McKinnon. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G. W. Hart, W. King. A. Elkins and D. Adams VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE NEW UNIFORMS ISSUED. At last night’s meeting of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade the new uniforms were issued to members. The providing of new uniforms was made possible as the result of a magnificent effort on the part of a strong ladies’ committee who some time since organised and carried into effect a ball which netted, with the aid of subscriptions, the sum of £7O. This was augmented to the extent.of £3O by other competitions, the effort of the ladies producing the sum of £llO for which /Ab-oy were very heartily thanked by the; Superintendent of the brigade and the firemen generally, who are proud to be the possessors of new uniforms. BeJifl.es buying the new uniforms which was made through the firms of the W.F.C.A. and Messrs Watson & Co. and tailored in Wellington, the brigade were able to purchase gum boots for all memb'ers of the brigade and. five good short coats for firefighting purposes With the equipment now in its possession the Brigade is among the best dressed in New Zealand, and this is wholly due to the ladies of Carterton and district.

BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card tournament in connection with the Carterton Boy Scouts was held in the Band Room last evening. There was a good attendance and the prizes were won by Mesdames Herdman and Page and Messrs Ammundsen and R. Banks. Supper was afterwards provided. Ash Wednesday. Yesterday was Ash Wednesday and a service was conducted in St Mark's Church, Carterton. by the Rev W. F. Stent, there being a good attendance. Personal. Mr J. Udy is improving after his operation at Brougham Street Hospital. Wellington. Ponatahi Sports. A large working bee is busy on the Carterton Showgrounds today arranging hurdles, etc., in readiness for the annual Ahiaruhe-Ponatahi Sports to be held on Saturday and which promise to be a great success.

A Squally Night. Carterton experienced a heavy gale last night with intermittent heavy rain showers.
