Marchioness as Censor.
Much amusement was caused when, in replying to speeches of welcome at the Auckland Town Hall the Marquess of Willingdon glanced apprehensively at his wife before referring to the time that had elapsed since their last visit to New Zealand. When he said it was 43 years ago he received a hearty tug at the coat tails from Lady Willingdon. Later when he referred to his mature years and long public life the process was repeated- Lord Willingdon said that his wife put him into a state of nervous strain during a speech because he knew she would pull his coat if he said something which did not satisfy her.
