TENNIS AT MIRAMAR
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. AUSTRALIANS COMPETING. (By Telegraph—Press Asociation.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Conditions were ideal at Miramax yesterday for the New Zealand lawn tennis championships. There was a northerly breeze with bright sunshine in the morning and an overcast sky in the afternoon. There was an unusual number of evenly-contested matches for the first day of such a tournament and though the leading players came through as expected, in several instances they were hard pressed. The courts were in excellent condition, though playing a trifle slow.
The Australian entrants, J. Bromwich and J. H. Crawford and Misses N. Wynne, T. Coyne and M. Hardcastle, made their first appearance today. TODAY’S PLAY RAIN INTERRUPTS TOURNEY. APPEARANCE OF AUSTRALIANS. WELLINGTON. This Day. Players in the New Zealand Centennial tennis championships had to contend with a gusty northerly wind, and dead courts- after several light showers of rain that fell shortly after play began. A heavy shower at 1 p.m. interrupted play. The men’s and women's singles and combined doubles matches were played this morning. Chief interest centred round the appearance of the Australian players after lunch, but rain was still falling at 1.30 p.m. Results: —
