At the races at Riccarton on Saturday Willie Win accounted for the chief event, the Midsummer Handicap, bringing off a surprise. Doria won the Middle Park Plate and the Craven Plate fell to Concertpitch after a keen tussle with the favourite Nightcalm. The principal event at the Wanganui meeting, the Earle Stakes was won by Gay Mimic, an outsider, while the sprint went to Amigo which won comfortably from the favourite, Black Thread. The Matamata Cup resulted in a surprise win for Erlick. The Carroll Memorial Handicap at the Wairoa meeting was won by Small Boy, and the Tapanui Handicap at the Tapanui races went to Pink Robe.
