On the Eketahuna Bowling Club’s greens yesterday afternoon during the afternoon tea adjournment Mr F. Cowlam said he wished, on behalf of his fellow club’ members, to express their esteem of and regard for their worthy president, Mr W. Simpson. “It is his birthday today," said Mr Cowlam, “and if I were to enumerate all that he has done for the club then I’m afraid I would be speaking for a long time.” The improvements made of late to the club’s greens had been solely his work. The speaker assured Mr Simpson that the members appreciated his interest and help. He asked Mr Simpson to accept from them a leather bowling bag, together with the wish that he would enjoy many more birthdays with them.

"For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” was heartily sung, and the toast to Mr Simpson’s health was honoured. Mr C. J. DeLacey, on behalf of the Carterton Club members, extended his club’s good wishes to Mr Simpson. Mr DeLacey said that the members of his club looked forward to the annual visit to Eketahuna. He knew that Mr Simpson was a happy man among a happy band of bowlers, and he hoped that such happy times would long continue.

“I am quite taken back by the splendid gift and expressions of goodwill extended to me,” said Mr Simpson in reply. He went on to state that he was always out to do his best for the club. There was a lot of fun to be had on the bowling green, and it was good to be a member of the Eketahuna Club. He hoped to be able to continue as a member, and enjoy the good fellowship of the members, for many years to come (applause).
