Patriotic Fund.

The acknowledgment published yesterday of a donation of £1 to the Mayor’s Patriotic Fund, given under the name of Mr G. Whyborn, should have read Mr R. Whyborn. Stray Dogs.

A Borough official stated this morning that he wished to warn people that any stray dogs without collars found in Masterton would be impounded and later destroyed. It was pointed out that a large number of dogs have been found straying around the town lately and the other day a dog was destroyed after having bitten several people. The danger of stray dogs on the road from the motorists' point of view was also stressed. Record High Tide.

Claimed to be the highest recorded at Kawhia for 38 years, a recent tide swept over the roadway and inundated gardens in the township. Back yards of shops on the main thoroughfare were flooded and in some cases the water almost reached the shop floor levels. At the wharf the water was lapping between the decking planks, while the wharf shed was well below the level of the tide. On the Aparau-Kawhia road the water overflowed the protective sea wall and flooded the roadway for a distance of nearly a mile. The wall was damaged in several places and a considerable amount of erosion took place. Il was stated by old residents that similar tides have not been seen at Kawhia since 1902.

Anti-Waste Campaign.—A former resident of Masterton, Mr D. Smith, has commenced business in Masterton as a cash buyer of metals, rags, paper and batteries. Mr Smith will make a personal collection of the saleable waste articles as stated above, his business premises being situated at 9 Queen Street.
