FOUNDATION GARMENTS

“NO MORE WHALEBONES.” MODERN WOMAN'S ASSET. The important place of modern foundation garments in. the wardrobe of the well-dressed, woman is commented upon by a leading fashion expert in an overseas paper. The writer draws an amusing parallel between the “whaleboned monstrosities" of 100 years ago and the snug-fitting silken garments of today, and points out that a careful, selection of corsetry gives a correct balance to the lines and curves of the figure. “Whereas our grandmothers were restricted as to their breathing, and constricted as to their waistline,” he states, “the modern woman is able to move in. perfect freedom and comfort and still be secure in the knowledge that, owing to modern skill in corset-making, her figure is suitably supported.” Two of the main features of modern foundation garments, he continues, are their comfort and their attractive appearance—factors which carry much weight with the average woman of today. The use of satin, lace and ribbon is an important move in the art of corset-making and one which has proved its merit in the continued popularity of the garments. “Women nowadays,” concludes the fashion expert,, “wear foundation garments which are the outcome of careful scientific study. They are no longer ‘encased in armour.’”
