CARTER lON COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. COLLECTION OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presided there being also present Councillors O. Wolters, W. A. Hart, H. Mortenson, E. McKenzie. L. M. Clark. C. E. Stevens and C. J. DeLacey. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors R. A. Copeland and J. Udy. The treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance of £699 4s 4d. Receipts since the last meeting of the council totalled £1355 16s Id. The gas works account showed a credit of £595 15s. The Oil Fuel Controller, Wellington wrote asking to what extent the council was prepared to reduce the quantities of petrol authorised under oil fuel licenses for the council. It was decided to notify the controller that 90 gallons of petrol pei month was the minimum amount the council required. The secretary of the National Patriotic Fund. Board. Wellington, wrote advising that at a meeting of the National Patriotic Fund Board held on January 19, it was agreed that a national fund collection should take place in the last week in February, the collection to be in the hands of the national collectors, the Y.M.C.A. and the Salvation Army. The letter also stated that a collection for the sick and woundeo would be held in the last week in April, immediately after Anzac Daj and was to be controlled by the Join. Council of the Order of St John, ana the New Zealand Red Cross Society. I’, was pointed out that in order to avoic. any overlapping in collections between the National Fund Board and the various Provincial "Patriotic Councils, before any national collection took place, the consent of the Mayor, or chairman of the local authority should be firs; obtained. It was asked that the council make note of the above dates, and, should the same not clash with any arrangements made by the council on behalf of provincial patriotic councils, facilitate the work of the national collectors.

It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayor, who is tc confer with the Masterton Borough Council in the matter.

The secretary of the Provincial Centennial Council wrote stating that i. was the desire of the Government tc, provide, through controlling committees. for persons (Maori or pakeha) who had resided 75 years or longei in New Zealand, a ribbon on which would be printed an impression of the National Centennial emblem, and the figure indicating the length of residence. The letter stated that it would be necessary for committees to. ascertain the number of ribbons required in their respective areas according to age classifications. It was suggested that an endeavour be made per medium of the Press to invite old settlers of over 75 years of residence to notify their locAi centennial organisation of their desire to receive a ribbon.

It. was decided to adopt the suggestion contained in the latter part of the letter.

The Department of Internal Affairs. Wellington, wrote stating that owing to a shortage of hydatid drug the regulations for the registration of dogt had been further advanced by a month, which brings the registration date fot 1940 to March 1.

The secretary of the Wellington, Nelson, Westland Local Bodies’, Othci Labourers and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers wrote asking that the council agree to the increase in the Wellington Industrial District Municipal employees award by 2d pei hour on hourly rates and 5s per week on weekly rates.

It was decided to refer the matter to the Municipal Employers’ Association. The secretary of the Opotiki District Patriotic Committee wrote forwarding a copy of a petition which had been sent to the Minister of Internal Affairs, and requesting the council’s support in the matter. The petition stated that thccompulsory pooling of patriotic funds in Auckland was making it almost impossible for the collection of a considerable fund or obtaining assistance in such collections. It was decided to take no action in the matter.

A letter was received from the chief traffic inspector of the Transport Department. Wellington, stating that the department would be prepared to control traffic for a voluntary payment ol £25 per annum from the Carterton. Featherston and Greytown Boroughs. The letter was received. Reports concerning work carried out in the borough were adopted. Mr W. H. Fryer of High Street, Carterton, was appointed caretaker of the. Clareville Cemetery. There were fiveapplications for the position.
