ABANDONED LIGHTSHIP

LONDON. January 30. The lightship abandoned on Monday was the East Dadgeon. . Eight members of the crew endeavoured to reach the shore in a boat but it capsized in the surf, seven being drowned. The sole survivor, John Saunders, said a huge Heinkel machine-gunned the decks and dropped nine bombs, the last of which hit the lightship. The crew rowed for 17 hours when only two were able to hold on to the oars. Saunders took his skipper on his back, when the boat capsized, and tried to reach the shore, but a wave swept the skipper off. Saunders struggled up the beach, entered a house without waking its occupants, wrapped himself in blankets and slept until morning when he Was found still numbed with cold.
