OUTBREAK OF FIRE AT ODD FELLOWS’ HALL. ' (“Times-Age” Special.) The fire brigade was called to an outbreak m the Odd Fenows’ Hall at 6.5 a.m. yesterday. On entering the building the brigadesmen found the fire to be confined to the floor of the building, and only a few buckets of water were required to extinguish it. The floor of the building was badly damaged, a hole 12ft. in diameter being burnt out. The cause is not known. It is understood that the last time the hall was used was on Friday night last.
CENTENNIAL SPORTS ON SATURDAY NEXT. A committee meeting of the Eketahuna Amateur Athletic Club was held on Saturday night when all arrangements were finalised for the Centennial Sports gathering next Saturday. A band of voluntary helpers during the weekend did excellent work on the track and grounds. Competitors and spectators alike are assured of an enjoyable day’s outing. W. Russell, a member of the Eketahuna Athletic Club, competing in the inter-provincial championships at Christchurch on Saturday set a fresh New Zealand record for the junior championship hop, step and jump with 44ft. ljin. Personal. Mi’ and Mrs A. L. Wilson and family left today to take up their residence in Pahiatua. FORESTERS’ LODGE CARD TOURNAMENT. The half-yearly card tournament between Loyal Makakahi (Eketahuna), Loyal Enterprise' (Masterton) and Loyal Marquis of Normandy (Carterton) was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, Masterton, on Saturday night. A hearty welcome was extended to the visiting brethren by Bro. Walker, of Loyal Enterprise Lodge. After many keenly fought games, the following result was announced: Loyal Marquis of Normandy, 19; Loyal Makakahi (holders), 15; Loyal Enterprise, 7. After the games a short toast list was honoured and opportunity was taken to present the shield to the Carterton Lodge. Bro. O. Walton (Eketahuna) in handing the trophy to Bro. Fisher, congratulated the Carterton Lodge on their win. Bro. Fisher suitably replied.
The toast of the “District Executive” was proposed by Bro. Barr. Bro. Fisher, District Junior’ Woodward, in replying gave a very interesting report on the work of the executive. Other toasts honoured were: “The Runners-up,” proposed by Bro. Smith, replied to by Bro. S. Daniel; “Court Loyal Enterprise,” proposed by Bro. R. Gyde. Much appreciated items were contributed by Bros. R. Gyde and J. Ammundsen.
CRICKET MATCHES POSTPONED. All cricket matches in the Bush championship were postponed on Saturday on account ol the Pahiatua races. OBITUARY MR R. THOMASEN. The death occurred in the Pahiatua Hospital on Saturday night of Mr Ras Thomasen, a highly respected setler ol Atea. The late Mr Thomasen was badly injured when a rail-car crashed into his car at the level crossing at Hukanui station on Thursday evening last.
