STREET AFFRAY
SERGEANT OF POLICE INJURED. THREE MEN OVERPOWERED AFTER TUSSLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. A sergeant of police received injuries to the face requiring hospital treatment when he and two constables became involved in an encounter with three men at the corner of Cuba Street and Manners Street, Wellington, last night.. Sergeant -F. J. P. Bonnington and Constable P. Stanaway were on duty near the Royal Oak Hotel at about 9.30 when it is alleged two men on the opposite corner began to abuse them. The sergeant ordered the men to move on. Instead of complying, however, one of the men. it is stated, used obscene language concerning the sergeant. While about to arrest the man Sergeant Bonnington was struck savagely on the side of the face. Constable Stanaway proceeded to take the sergeant’s assailant in charge, but was obstructed by a third man. Blows were exchanged freely, the two police officers then being reinforced by Constable E. B. Rennie.
The three men were overpowered with difficulty and removed to the Taranaki Street police station. Sergeant Bonnington was taken to Wellington Public Hospital for attention, but was not seriously hurt.
