WAR EFFORT

CANADA’S BIG PROGRAMME. EXPANSION OF ALL ARMS. Canada's programme of war expenditure was announced by the Minister of Transport, Mr Clarence Howe, in a speech at Ottawa, states a broadcast from Daventry. Nearly £7,000.000 would be spent on submarine chasers, mine-sweepers, and parts of the 4000 aeroplanes for the Empire air training scheme. He added that no aeroplane engines were being made in Canada, orders for these having been, placed with Britain and the United States.

Mr Howe stated that a factory in Toronto, which was executing an order for 12,000 Bren guns for the British and Canadian Governments, was about three months ahead of schedule, and would start delivery in April instead of July. The war programme, said Mr Howe, would keep Canadian shipyards and factories working at full capacity. The sum of £2,500,000 would be spent, on bombers and other types of planes for the Royal Canadian Air Force for home defence. Of this sum, about 75 per cent would be spent within ine Dominion.
