REGIME IN CHINA

NO BRITISH RECOGNITION PUPPET GOVERNMENT. STATEMENT BY MR CHAMBERLAIN (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. January 24. In the House of Commons, Mr Chamberlain, replying to a question about the proposed setting up of a Chinese Government headed by Mr Wang Ching Wei, under Japanese protection, said:

“On January 9 Japan issued a statement to the effect that a movement for the establishment of a new central Government in China had now gathered strength. A careful study, the statement continued, had revealed that what was in the mind of Mr Wang Ching Wei was in keeping with the declared intentions of Japan and the Japanese Empire would accordingly direct all possible efforts to help the formation of a new Government. "The only Government, in China recognised by Britain and with which Britain is in diplomatic relations is the National Government of China in which General Chiang Kai-shek is chairman of the Supreme Defence Council and President of the Executive Council." JAPANESE DECIMATED DIVISION OVERWHELMED. FOUR THOUSAND KILLED. HONG KONG, January 25. The Chinese Central News reports that the Kwangs! troops overwhelmed a Japanese division of 15,000, killing 4000 and wounding 7000 in the mountain passes 200 miles north-west of Hankow.
