‘SUSANNAH OF THE MOUNTIES'
SHIRLEY TEMPLE LENDS HER PONY.
Shirley Temple, remembering how “Ching Ching,” her pet Pekingese, was given a role in “Just Around the Corner,” and kirbwing that she was scheduled to ride a pony in “Susannah of the Mounties,” sent a letter to Associate Producer Kenneth Macgowan offering “Roanie,” her own pony, for the role. She pointed out that, besides be ing very comfortable and safe and accustomed to her riding, “Roanie's services could be acquired for a very nominal fee.”
Macgowan showed it to Darryl F. Zanuck, who immediately ordered a screen test. “Roanie” passed the test successfully, and everything was set except for the fee. On this point Shirley and Macgowan went into conference, and agreed upon a rental of 10 dollars a day, payable to Shirley’s milk fund. This is her pet charity, depending entirely upon “fines” imposed by the Shirley Temple police. “Susannah of the Mounties," the 20th Century-Fox picture, features Randolph Scott and Margaret Lockwood, star of “The Lady Vanishes.” It concerns the conflict between the Indians opposing the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway ,and the famous Mounted Police.
The cast includes Martin Good Rider, a young Indian lad who plays Shirley’s first “leading man,” J. Farrell MacDonald, Maurice Moscovich, Moroni Olsen, Victor Jory, and Lester Matthews.
