NORTH ISLAND TITLES MEN’S SINGLES TO R. HOWE. MISS BEVERLEY WINS WOMEN'S SINGLES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ January 13. Some splendid tennis was seen at the Linton Street courts today, when the semifinals and finals of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association's North Island tournament were decided.

Possibly the best singles game of the tournament was that between R. MacKenzie, the Wellington junior, and F. Renouf, in the semifinals. MacKenzie took the first set 6-1, but early in the second set Renouf frequently had him guessing and assumed the acendancy. Had he maintained the pressure in the third set he would have won, but MacKenzie came again, and, playing carefully, won the deciding set comfortably. In the final of the men’s singles R. Howe somewhat easily beat MacKenzie. The winner varied his strokes and pace, and his placing was extremely accurate, forcing MacKenzie to hurry his shots.

A good exhibition of attacking play was given in the final of the women's singles by Misses M. Beverley and B. Potter, which was in direct contrast to the play in the men’s section. Both players went for the sideline, and both showed accuracy. In the final set Miss Beverley asserted her superiority.

The final of the women’s doubles was characterised by driving duels between Biss Z. Castle and Miss M. Beverley, Miss N. Beverley cutting in and clinching the points. Some promising girls were seen in the junior section. Apart from the winner. Miss N. Huse (Wellington), excellent form was shown by Miss T. Sexton (Palmerston North) who in the earlier games was the only player to extend Miss Huse thoroughly. Promising form was also shown by Miss Attwood (Levin).

At the conclusion of the play the prizes were presented by the mayor. Mr Mansford. Till the final hour's play, when the mixed doubles final was being contested, the weather held fine and hot, with the courts very fast. Light rain fell in the final hour, making the grass rather treacherous. Results: — Men’s Singles. Semifinals: R. Howe beat H. D. Gyles, 6-2. 6-2; R. MacKenzie beat F. Renouf, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
