CARTERTON
BOWLING CLUB COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance of members on the ' Carterton Bowling Club’s green on Saturday and some excellent games were played. The green was very fast, and the wind did not improve the conditions. Afternoon tea was provided and was supervised by Mesdames Stubbs and Chat.win to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded by the bowlers. The following are results of the games played:— Foster, Chatwin, Barr, Barber (s) defeated Kilmister, Booth, Martin, Stent (s), 27/22. Hawker, Campbell. Smith, Riggs (s), defeated Boyne, Hill, Simmonds, Hughan (s). 24/14. McCarty, Meyrick, G. Steven, Aplin (s), defeated Dudson, Savill, Lynch. Nicolson (s), 27/14. Matson, W. Stevens, Harp (s), defeated Hipkins, W. Hart Beale (s), 21/19. Newbould, Robertson, Larsen (s), defeated Colson, De Lacey, Bain (s), 33/22. CARTERTON v EKETAHUNA. Arrangements have been made to play the annual fixture, Carterton v Eketahuna,. on February 4. Five rinks will participate in the match. P. AND T. ROSE MEDALS. The holders of the P. and T. Rose Medals, Messrs Harry Simmonds and George Riggs, have received a challenge from a Wellington pair, and in all probability the match will be played next Saturday.
GUN CLUB
MEETING ON SATURDAY. Members of -the Carterton Gun Club held a series of competitions on the Carterton racecourse on Saturday. The wind was troublesome, but despite this fact some good shooting was done. The following are the results: — Twenty-five bird match: R. Fuge, from 12 yards, broke 21 “clays,” R. Williams (12) 21. L. Smith (14) 20, Rex Walker (13) 20, W. Moroney (12) 20. Ten bird match. —L. Smith (14) 10. W. Moroney (12) 10. Ten bird match. —L. Smith (15) 10, R. Williams (13) 10.

Gimcrack match.—R. Fuge (11) 7, H. K. Smith (16) 6. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. The New Zealand Centennial Gun Club Championships will be fired at the Hutt Valley Gun Club grounds, Lower Hutt, commencing tomorrow, and will be continued on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The first day will be principally devoted to the £l5O sweepstake match and the New Zealand championship will be decided on Wednesday. Among the Carterton shooters competing will be Messrs W. Moroney, Rex Walker, L. Smith, . A. Teal and J. Udy and possibly F. Taplin. Grass Fire. A grass fire broke out on the railway line on Saturday afternoon and soon spread to the Carterton racecourse. The wind at the time was blowing strongly. Members of the Carterton Gun Club who were firing matches on the grounds, noticing that the fire had got out of hand, dropped their guns and went to the assistance of the railway employees. After a . short fight the fire was put out before much damage was done. It is thought that the fire was caused by a spark from a passing railway engine. Beneficial Rain. Rain, which was of great benefit to the pastures and the gardens fell throughout Saturday night and Sunday morning. Personal. Among the candidates in the Wellington Centre who were successful in the State examinations held in December for pupil nurses was Miss Gwen McKenzie, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. McKenzie, of High Street, Carterton. Messrs Ross, Hawker, J. Binns, R. Ordish and G. Townsend have return-ed-from a holiday spent at Waikaremoana, Rotorua. Tauranga, Whakatane —and Auckland. They returned home by the West Coast. Borough Office Alterations. Carpenters this morning commenced alterations to the Borough Council offices. The present office has been long since found too small for the use of the clerk and his staff and as a consequence the front room of the i residential portion of the building is to be added to the office.
