TRANSPORT CONTROL

FARMERS’ REPRESENTATIVES. VIEWS OF WAIRARAPA EXECUTIVE. Representations are to be made by the Wairarapa Provincial Executive with a view to farmers having representation in transport matters. The Dominion Secretary, Mr A. P. O’Shea, wrote regarding a step taken by the Auckland Provincial . Office which was regarded as well worthy of being noted by other provinces, that branches or groups of branches should appoint a permanent representative to attend sittings of the Transport Licensing Authority. It was very necessary that the union should keep in close touch with all transport developments and it was recommended that the practice be extended and put into general use throughout New Zealand. Both Mr L. T. Daniell and Mr J. H. Bremncr agreed that the farmers were entitled to some kind of representation in transport matters, both on the Transport Committee in Wellington and at local sitting of the Transport Authority. On the motion of Mr Daniell, it was decided to suggest to the head office that the Dominion Secretary be the Farmers’ Union representative on the Transport Co-ordination Board, which sat in Wellington. The matter of securing authority to have a representative at local sittings of the Licensing Authority was a matter that would have to come before the Co-ordination Board, and any steps in that direction could well be dealt with by the union s representative, if it had one. on that board. “We are going to have a bit of lun over this,” observed Mr Daniell. “There is no such thing as co-ordina tion in transport. Motor lorries are being pushed oil the road and the railways are charging a monopoly rate instead of a competitive rate.
