OCEAN YACHT RACE
TWO COMPETITORS ARRIVE UNDER POWER. TAWHIRI LIKELY TO WIN. (By Telegraph—Press Asociation.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Two more of the yachts in the ocean race from Lyttelton reached Wellington this morning, under engine power, thus being automatically out of the race. They were the Mandalay and the Southern Light. The Raukawa entered the Heads and should be the second boat to finish, but on corrected times cannot challenge the Tawhiri The skipper of the Tawhiri, Mr Noel Brown, said this morning that his boat was becalmed for two hours at the start, but a fresh southerly sprang up and blew very hard on Saturday night. The only damage was that the main sheet block was carried away. In the morning, the breeze fell away and they had a light southerly to Cape Campbell. From there on, the wind changed to north-westerly and they had to tack up the harbour entrance. The Tawhiri’s position is not yet secure, as several yachts have still chances on handicap, but it is considered that the Tawhiri will win. The Arawa was reported al Port Underwood with a split mainsail.
