GANDHI’S LEADERSHIP

PLEDGE FOR ORGANISED

MILLIONS AT NATIONAL CONGRESS CELEBRATIONS. DENUNCIATION OF BRITISH RULE. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. (Received This Day, at noon.) BOMBAY, January 12. Mr Gandhi’s organised millions arc reciting the following pledge on January 26, when the Indian National Congress holds its tenth annual celebrations: "We believe it is the inalienable right of the Indian people to have freedom and enjoy the fruits of their toil. We believe that if any Government deprived the people of these rights, the people have a further right to alter or abolish it. The British Government has not only deprived the Indian people of their freedom but has based itself on the exploitation of the masses and has ruined India, economically. culturally and spiritually. We believe that India must sever the British connection and obtain complete independence. We recognise that the most effective way of gaining our freedom is not violence. India has gained strength and self-reliance and has marched a long way towards independence after peaceful and legitimate methods. It is by adhering to these methods that we will attain independence. We know that though we are out to destroy the imperialist system, we have no quarrel with Englishmen, whether officials or non-officials."
