CROQUET
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. PLAY AT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The official opening of the New Zealand croquet championships took place at Riddiford Park yesterday when more than 200 competitors were assembled to take part in the tournament. The president, Mr R. W. Me Creath, welcomed the players and expressed pleasure at the large number of entries. Players, together with visitors, were entertained at morning tea by the Waimarie, Hutt and Woburn clubs.
The championship doubles were begun and though intermittent rain fell during the morning, 16 games were concluded. The outstanding matches of the day were: Mrs Watkins and J. Tannock against Mesdames Kibblewhite and Hawken, and Mrs McLeod and Mc- | Creath against Miss Morgan and Mrs Rockell. The following are the results of the matches played during the day:— Championship doubles, first round: — ! Mrs Smith and Blunt beat Mesdames I Nicholson and Johnson, 26-18; Mrs Me-1 Kerrow and Managh beat Mesdames Keys and Bartlett, 26-25; Mrs McLeod and R. W. McCreath beat Mrs Rockell and Miss Morgan, 26-9; Mrs Clark and A. J. Gibbs beat Mrs Henderson and Orgier, 26-17; Mrs Walker and W. Jarvie beat Mrs Denz and Mclntyre, 26-18. Second round: —Mrs Watkins and J. Tannock beat Mesdames Kibblewhite and Hawken, 26-8; Bryan and Mrs Bryan beat Mesdames Bryant and Bagrie, 26-4; Mrs Smith and Blunt beat Mesdames McLennan and McCreath,
26-7; Mrs Clark and A. J. Gibbs beat Mrs Walker and W. Jarvie, 26-8; Mrs Palmer and McClymont beat Penn and Mrs Penn, 26-21; Mrs Lowery and Miss Claughton beat Mesdames Gambrill and Pitcaithly, 26-20; Mesdames Harper and Greig beat Mesdames Simpson and Wood, 26-22. Third round: —Mesdames Watkins and Tannock beat Bryan and Mrs Bryan, 26-7; Mrs Lowery and Miss Claughton beat Mesdames Harper and Greig, 26-10. Women's championship:—Mrs Henderson beat Mrs McLeod. 26-14. Level singles No 2 (54 to 7 bisques): —Mrs McKay beat Mrs Blunt, 26-17; Mrs Knowes beat Mrs Sheargold, 26-9; Mrs Coe beat Miss McKenzie, 26-18; Mrs Middleton beat Mrs Thomas, 26-16. Open championship. Section I:—Mrs Gambrill beat Mrs Pitcaithly, 26-21; Ogier beat Mrs Nicholson, 26-20: Miss Washer beat Mrs Tiffen 26-22. Section 3:—Mrs Wood beat Mrs Key, 26-15. Section 4:—Managh beat Mrs Kibblewhite. 26-12; Palmer beat Mrs Cadwallader, 26-17; Mrs McMurray beat Mrs Bryan, 26-18. Section s:—Mrs Johnson beat F. L. Harrison, 26-14.
