SWIMMING

<. MASTERTON CLUB. ACTIVITIES FOR SEASON. A meeting of the committee of the Masterton Swimming Club was held last evening when various matters in connection with chib activities were decided. Carnivals are now taking place in various towns within reach of Masterton and it is hoped that the club will be well represented at them. The Eketahuna Swimming Club commenced its competitions last evening and several Masterton swimmers made the trip privately and figured prominently in the events. Three intermediate boys. T. Burns. K. Cairns and K. McFarlane went to Lower Hutt where they took part in the trials in connection with the choosing of a team to represent the Wellington Centre at the forthcoming junior and intermediate New Zealand championships. The Hutt Club will hold its annual carnival in the Riddiford Baths, Lower Hutt, next Thursday and any member of the Masterton Club who wish to compete must hand in their names to either of the club secretaries, Messrs. Geo. Barr or R. Barnes, before midday on Saturday. As insufficient swimmers have come forward to date it is not possible to send a club bus to Lower Hutt so that intending competitors will require to make their own transport arrangements. The Dannevirke Carnival will be held on Saturday evening, January 27, and it is hoped to provide a Masterton bus to take competitors and friends. The cost of transport in the bus should not be more than about seven shillings to club members. Entries should be sent in to the local club secretaries before January 18 so that arrangements can be finalised.

The Masterton Swimming Club's carnival has been set down for Saturday night, February 24. The Centre has recently written to the club regarding the use of shorts in competition swimming. This is contrary to the rules and the Centre asks clubs to debar competitors from competing in any other than full costumes. The standard of junior diving in the Masterton Club is rapidly improving, and it is satisfactory to see both the girls and boys attempting other than plain dives. This year four dives will be set as compulsory dives for the junior championships and although they have not yet been officially chosen juniors would do well to practice plain headers, back somersaults, backward spring forward with pike (inward dive) and half screws. In addition competitors must do four other dives of their own choosing.

If sufficient entries are forthcoming both senior ladies and men’s diving championships will also be held by the local club and the compulsory dives for these will be set later. They will probably be the same as for the New Zealand championships with slight differences to suit local conditions.
