GREYTOWN

THE CENTENARY ARRANGEMENTS WELL FORWARD. (“Times-Age” Special.) Arrangements for fittingly celebrating the Centenary are well advanced in Greytown, and Wairarapa’s senior township is likely to provide a display on Saturday, February 17. that will live long in the memories of those fortunate enough to witness it. for Greytown has much to portray in its cavalcade of memories. A full day’s holiday is to be observed, and prominent personalities have promised to give the event their patronage. As the first Post Office in the Wairarapa was established in Greytown, the Postal Department is considering the question of making a fitting display. Then again, the first Bank in the Wairarapa was opened in Greytown and the Bank of New Zealand officials have agreed to make special decorations for the occasion. At a meeting of the committee held on Wednesday evening it was reported that a letter had been forwarded to the Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Association pointing out that a projected gathering had been fixed for the same date as the Greytown celebrations and asking if an alteration could be made so that the functions would not clash. A reply had been received that the matter would be considered but holding out little possibility of the clash being averted. The Prime Minister has replied to the committee that, owing to a prior engagement, he could not attend the function, but promising to ascertain if one of his colleagues could represent the Government.

The Mayoress reported that the ladies of the town were forming themselves into a catering committee and that many spontaneous offers of help had been received. A band of young ladies was being organised to wait on the tables and provision would be made for about 100 guests at the luncheon to the pioneers. It was decided that several special invitations be issued for the luncheon, including representatives of the Maori race, and tentative arrangements were made for the speakers at the Rest Room opening and at the luncheon.

Band arrangements were also discussed and instructions given in reference to the same. It was resolved 1o inaugurate a

competition in order to provide funds to meet the expenses. An old-time dance or other appropriate function is to be organised for the Friday evening in order to entertain visitors. Other matters were discussed and it was decided to hold a further meeting to receive reports of progress from the numerous committees. Lawn Tennis.
