PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE FORMED AT MEETING LAST NIGHT ("Times-Age” Special.) A meeting was held in the Anzac Hall last night, having been called by the Mayor, Mr J. W. Card, for the purpose of forming a patriotic committee. There was an attendance of about fifty. Mr Card briefly outlined the objects of the meeting. The following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr J. W. Card; secretary, Mr G. M. Browne; general committee. Mesdames R. Harqy, Bergh, Sharp, Halpin, King. Smith, Lowell, Lawson. Gordon, Tutbury (2), Rea, McKenzie, Fellingham, Saunders, Raper, Miss H. Card. Dr Sharp, Messrs J. Holland, R. Hardy, T. Hardie, K. Allen, Kenward, Ritchie, Shepherd, Robbins, Halpin, King, Lawson, Gordon. McKenzie, Arch Clark, Tait, W. Robinson; executive committee, Mr Card (chairman), Mesdames Carlyon. Sharp and McKenzie, Messrs Robbins, Alien and Shepherd.
TO MARK CENTENNIAL
SWIMMING CARNIVAL IN FEBRUARY. After the patriotic meeting last night a discussion took place in regard to the Centennial celebrations, and it was decided to mark the, occasion by holding a swimming carnival on February 10. Damage to Crops and Gardens. A strong north-westerly gale was experienced throughout yesterday and last night, .doing damage to crops and gardens. Euchre Tournament. The prizewinners in the euchre tournament held by the Haunui Croquet Club in the Anzac Hall were as follow:—Ladies, Mrs Worsely 1, Mrs Edwards 2. Men, Mr Fuge 1, Mr Skipage 2. Haunui Croquet Club. The winners of the Haunui Croquet Club's sealed handicaps were as follow: A grade, Miss Esma Card; B grade, Miss Viles. Personal Items. Mrs K. H. Allen and Miss Janet Allen left on Wednesday on a visit to Nelson. Mr and Mrs D. C. Collins and family are spending a holiday at Paekakariki. Miss Jocelyn McNiven, Hawke’s Bay, is the guest, of Mrs Sharp. Mrs S. Cundy, has returned from a visit to Te Hopi. Miss B. Sharp is visiting Taupo and is the guest of Miss Dove. The Rev J. T. Holland and Mrs Holland are spending a holiday at the seaside. The friends of Mrs W. Fuge will regret to hear that she has had to enter the Kelvin Private Hospital for treatment. Stewards Photographed. Yesterday afternoon at the Tauherenikau Racecourse the stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club met and were photographed. The last time the stewards were photographed was in 1922. Only two of that group were in yesterday’s photograph, Messrs J. W. Card and Thos Benton.
