GERMANY’S HOPE

SECRET MESSERSCHMITT PLANE PUBLICATION OF DETAILS. SOME STATED SHORTCOMINGS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. • (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, January 11. The secrets of the German Messerschmitt destroyer plane (particulars and photos of which have been published in the British “Aeroplane”) were known only to a handful of German experts. It is disclosed that the machine is capable of convoying bombers to any part of Britain. It can travel 820 miles at 365 miles an hour, 1500 miles at 215 miles an hour, and 1750 miles at 175 miles an hour. It possesses twin cannon with which it could outrange bombers’ defensive guns and also twin machine-guns, which the pilot operates. The gunner operates further twin machine-guns. The poor manoeuverability and comparatively weak gunpower of the machines make them an easy prey for British fighters. The new Messerschmitt failed badly in the Heligoland Bight on December 18. It is significant that twice as many German fighters have been destroyed in France as any other type. Thus far German bombers have not destroyed a single British fighter.
