A Patchy Performer. Rodborough, winner of the Villiers Stakes on the opening day of the Australian Jockey Club meeting, succeeded through sheer merit, being caught at his best on the day. He has been a patchy performer but could not be criticised in any may in his latest race. In a field of 21, however, there had to be some misfortune, and Mildura and Korimako (the latter owned by P. Riddle). who finished third and fourth, probably' would have fought out the finish with all conditions equal. Mildura, trained for Mr E. J. Watt by G. Price, was forced to race off the course, and McCarten had him at least eight horses wide on the turn. For a few strides in the last furlong Mildura looked like winning, but his run ended and he was beaten by little more than a length into third. Rival Hit Unfortunate. Rival Hit. who finished fifth in the Villiers Stakes, had his turn in the Australian Jockey Club Handicap on the second day. starting at a remarkable good price, and winning convincingly. The son of Winning Hit has been difficult to train and was sore going to the post. Although he won. the race finished him off, and he will have to have another spelll. Bel Oiseau, the Beau Pere—Joybird three-year-old, finished third to Rival Hit, coming from a fair position, and is racing consistently.
