BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council, was held last night. The Deputy-Mayor. Cr W. Olsen presided in the unavoidable absence ol the Mayor (Mr W. Simpson). Alsc present were Crs D. D. Ryan, U. W. Priest, P. Page, E. H. Simmers, K. Marenzi and the clerk, Mr B. Dinnan. The treasurer reported on the finances as at December 31 as follows: — District Fund Account, dr £lO7l 5s 6d; Domain Account, cr £4 17s; rate ar? rears £359 0s 8d: cemetery arrears £lO 10s; library arrears 7s 6d. The report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £l9O Ils 10r( were passed for payment. Cr Page reported that it had not been possible for the Mayor and himself, as the committee appointed, to discuss the matter of the proposed installation of mercury vapour lights in the Main Street. It would be possible, however, to have something definite to place before the next council meeting. The Eketahuna Athletic Club wrote asking permission to use the Domain and also to make a charge on the occasion of its annual meeting on February 3. The request was granted subject to the usual conditions. It was decided to erect a public notice board outside the Municipal Buildings. The clerk reported that a Public Risk insurance policy had been taken out in connection with the children’s playground. The Librarian (Mr Dinnan) reported as follows: For the period October 1, 1939, to December 31, 1939, the number of books issued was £845. The subscribers number 61. The total subscriptions and extra book fees collected for the quarter amounted to £ll 3s 9d. Eighteen new publications had been catalogued and placed on the shelves of the lending department.—The report was adopted. HEALTH OF THE BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Health Inspector, Mr J.. M. Swain, submitted his quarterly report, from October 1 to December 31, to the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council last night. The report stated: "There has been no cases of notifiable disease and the' present indications are satisfactory. All food shops and eating houses have been inspected at varying intervals and a good standard is being maintained. The usual perusal of all plans prior to the issue of building permits has been made; inspections of building structures during the course of erection, also tests applied to sewage drains before passing. The general standard of workmanship has been very good, and the by-laws are being complied with. Complaints of varying natures have been investigated, and where defective conditions have arisen steps to rectify these have been taken. With regard to the public swimming baths I would be pleased if the council would give direction to have chlorination carried out, similar to that done last year.” SWIMMING CLUB MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The president, Dr E. M. Simmers, presided over the following committee members of the Eketahuna Swimming Club at the monthly meeting held last night: Messrs R. Gallagher, J. Gaskin, W. Duffiill, S. J. O'Regan, K. MurVay, S. Daniell, Mrs Reid, Misses P. O'Regan and E. and A. Simmers. It was decided that "club nights" commence on Thursday and thereafter weekly. The following officers were appointed to conduct the club nights: Entry steward, Mr S. Daniell; starter. Mr C. H. Parsons; handicapper, Mr W. V. Richardson; timekeeper. Mr G. Jesson; diving judges, Messrs A. L. Wilson and W. Duffiill; announcer, Mr F. Goggin. Appreciative references, were made to Mr A. L. Wilson’s services to the club during his stay in the town. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to Mr Wilson. The secretary was instructed to communicate with neighbouring clubs with a view to commencing the polo cup competition. It was decided to erect a new diving board, and the donation of £1 by a member of the committee was accepted with thanks. Mr K- Murray was elected a member of the committee. Personal. Mr and Mrs W. Dawson returned on Sa tu rday from a visit to Khan da 11 ah.
