LAWN TENNIS

PAHIATUA TOURNAMENT. SINGLES TO MARTINBOROUGH PLAYER. Gordon McLeod. Martinborough, won the men’s singles championship of the Pahiatua tennis tournament, defeating Gavin Callender, Makomako, in straight sets. McLeod is easily the most outstanding singles player at the tournament. He has 'a steady, at times vicious forehand, and a backhand that works like clockwork, while his volleying is superb. Further than this he does not important thing—watches the ball right on to his racquet. The ladies’ singles title went to Miss Grace Bissct, who had a grand battle over the three sets with Miss Ngaire Etz, the last going to advantage. Miss Etz fought gamely to make the score 6-5 from 3-5 in the third set. but was unable to keep up the pressure and went down 8-6. With Miss C. Boyd, Miss Bisset also won the ladies’ championship doubles, defeating Mesdames W. P. Nelson and T. Harvey over the full distance.
