PLUNKET SHIELD CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND. MODERATE SCORING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 5. At -the end of the first days play in the Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Canterbury on which the destiny of the trophy rests, neither side could claim an advantage. Fighting all the way against a powerful attack, Canterbury did well to reach 227, a total which seemed well within the reach of the home side. However, the opening of Auckland’s innings provided a sensation, the first two wickets falling for nine runs and at stumps the score was -50 for two wickets. The poor batting was attributable more to the calibre of the bowling than to lack of initiative. For Canterbury Cromb scored 51. Hadlee 35, Roberts 30, 28, Anderson 25 and O'Brien 12. Cleverley took 5 wickets for 67 runs. Cowie 3 for 54. and Burke 2 for 46. For Auckland Wallace has scored 23 not out. and Pearson 18 not out. Whitelaw and Sale are out.
