IN TURKISH EARTHQUAKE AREA BRITISH MEASURES OF HELP. RELIEF COMMITTEE FORMED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. ISTANBUL. January 4. Tremors continue in the earthquake area. One town is buried under 50 feet of rubble. Many villages are still isolated. As a result of the river Tigris overflowing its banks, the town of Diyarbekir in south-eastern Anatolia is now under water. A great deal of damage has resulted, but there has been no loss of life. * In eastern Turkey, earth tremors continue, and it is thought that they are likely to be experienced for the next six months. Further assistance to the stricken Turks has been organised in England. In’ addition to the cash grant of £25,000 made by the Government, an Anglo-Turkish relief committee has been formed with Lord Lloyd as president. The French High Command at Smyrna has placed large quantities of tents and blankets at the disposal of the Turkish Government for the use of earthquake refugees. The Turkish Government has accepted an offer from the British military authorities in Palestine to deliver 200 tents for earthquake refugees, a Daventry message states. It is added that Turkey has experienced more earthquake shocks but no further damage is reported. A remission of the sentences on fifty convicts is expected in recognition of their conduct during the earthquake. The convicts made their way out of the wrecked prison, but instead of escaping they organised rescue parties and saved many lives.

AMNESTY TO CONVICTS ON ACCOUNT OF GALLANT RESCUE WORK. (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) INSTANBUL, January 5. The Government is introducing an urgent motion in the Assembly, granting an amnesty to 50 convicts who, instead of escaping during the earthquake, organised rescue squads and extricated from debris over a thousand persons, particularly women and child; ren.
