YOUNG MAORI KILLED
CAR COLLIDES WITH HEAVY LORRY. IMPACT HEARD TWO MILES AWAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, This Day. A young Maori was killed almost instantly and two others were seriously injured when' a light car in which they were travelling crashed head on into a heavily-laden timber lorry, on the main road near Pakipaki at midnight last night. The victims were':— Killed: Barney Kani, aged 17. Pakipaki, died almost immediately from head injuries. Injured: Joe Nepata, of Puketapu, concussion and lacerations. Joe Wharematua, of Puketapu. same injuries as Napata. Mrs Max Redman, of Auckland, an occupant of the truck, suffered slight injuries. The car was completely wrecked in a terrific impact, which was heard as far away as two miles. After the collision, the heavy lorry, to which a trailer was attached, careered across the roadway, overturned down a bank and crashed into a telegraph pole. The car was driven by the Maori who was killed. The driver of the truck was Lawrence Redman, of Napier. With him as passengers were Mr and Mrs Max Redman, of Auckland.
