POLLED HEREFORDS

NOTED WAIRARAPA PURCHASE. An interesting event in the Polled Hereford world is the purchase by the noted Waiorongomai breeder, Mr J. R. j Matthews, of High Stanway (Imp.) from the proprietors of the Waireia Estate, North Auckland. High Stanway (Imp), was selected in the United States by Mr C. E. Robertson, Manager of the Stud Stock Department, of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., in 1935. At this time the bull was six years old, anct was undefeated in the United States, being grand champion over all breeds at three State shows. He was a sire of some noted winners in the States. Mr Robertson, at the same time, purchased a son, High Stanway 1., for Mr J. R. Matthews, and this bull has bred splendidly at Waiorongomai, being the sire of Waio Stan, who was this year champion at the Manawatu Show. High Stanway I. has also left a splendid line of heifers. It is unfortunate that his sire High Stanway’s progeny have not been presented at the Shows as he has thrown some excellent stock. With the discontinuation of the stud at Waireia the opportunity came to Mr Matthews to secure High Stanway. Although he is now 10 years old he does not in any way show his age. - It is a general opinion among competent judges that he is the finest walker ever to have been imported.
