CENTENNIAL STAMPS DEMAND FOR NEW ISSUE. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was a good demand at th Carterton Post Office yesterday for th new Centennial postage stamps. Siam collectors were early on the scene sc curing supplies. The twelve stamp comprising the special Centennial sc range in value up to one shilling an 1 will remain in use throughout th: year. A PLEASANT FUNCTION AT CARTERTON POST OFFICE. On Friday evening in the mail roon at the Carterton Post and Telegrapl Office a very pleasant little functioi took place. Mr Fred Jackson, who ha carried out the duties of mail carrie: from the Post Office to the railway station and back for the past 17 years was entertained by the Postmaste: and his stall to mark his long period o service. Mr N. Boyne (Postmaster spoke in eulogistic terms of the mannci in which Mr Jackson had carried ou his work. Over the period of 17 yean Mr Jackson had never been known t( be late at his work and had neve: missed a mail. He had been a verj faithful official and they were all verj sorry that circumstances had necessitated his giving the worje up. M: Jackson had always been conscientious and reliable. On behalf of himself anc the staff he asked Mr Jackson to accep: a Loewe pipe, a well-filled- tobaccc pouch and a tin of tobacco. Mr Jackson thanked Mr Boyne Io: his kindly remarks and for the usefu gift' ' Late Mr W. E. Houghton. The funeral of the late Mr W. E Houghton, whose death took place or New Year's Eve, was held yesterday afternoon at the Clareville Cemetery Deceased who was an old Boer Wai veteran, was accorded a Returned Soldiers’ Association funeral. The Rev H White was the officiating clergymar and the pall bearers were members o the R.S.A.—Messrs C. Channels, C Manley, .George Smith, J. W. Smith, W Moroney and A. J. Lindop. Heavy Fall of Rain. About 11 o’clock yesterday a very heavy downpour of rain was experi enced in Carterton and in a short space of time the water tables in the borough were well filled. At the intersection of High and Holloway streets the grating on the underground waterway became blocked and the storm water made a lake half way across the main street. During the rain the weather was very cold and remained so all the afternoon. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs C. Billman, who have been visiting Carterton. returned to Auckland yesterday. Mr W. H. Whyte, who has been ill. with influenza, left yesterday to spend a holiday with his son at Stratford. | ' Mr and Mrs Williams, of Napier, are visitors to Carterton, and are staying with Mr ■ and Mrs W. Hayden. Holloway Street. They are accompanied by their daughter and motored through. They will visit the Centennial Exhibition before returning to Napier.
