HEAVY NEW ATTACKS
ON THE MANNERHEIM LINE RUSSIANS MASSING MEN AND MATERIAL. NOT AN INCH YIELDED BY FINNS. (Received This Day. 10.0 a.m.) HELSINKI, January 2. The Russians renewed fierce attacks against, the Mannerheim Line on the Karelian Isthmus today, trying to rush vital’ positions with masses of men and material. The Russian, artillery has been pounding the Finnish lines for thirty-six hours with increased intensity. The gunfire is audible at. Wiipuri. All reports agree that the Finns thus far have not yielded an inch. Large numbers of Russian wounded freeze to death in no man’s land. t It was announced in a Daventry broadcast early this morning that the Russian attack on the Mannerheim Line has been renewed with great intensity in the centre and south end. Military correspondents state that the Russians have brought up fresh troops, but they . are still being repulsed with heavy losses. It is estimated that there are 200,000 Russians now concentrated on this front. The artillery barrage accompanying the attack can be heard at Viborg, 20 miles behind the Mannerheim Line. In the north intense cold was holding up activities. CASTLE ABLAZE FINLAND’S’FINEST MUSEUM. (Received This Day, 10.0 a.m.) HELSINKI, January 2. Turku Castle was set on fire by a Russian bomber yesterday, when two persons were killed and four wounded. It is still burning today. It dates from the thirteenth century and houses Finland’s finest museum.
