WAIRARAPA MEETING

CUP TO GLOBE TROTTER. RAROTONGA SCORES IN PRESIDENT’S. The Wairarapa Racing Club concluded its annual meeting at Tauherenikau yesterday. The weather was fine and the track was in splendid order. Jockeys wore black arm bands in the principal events, and the stand flags were flying at half-mast owing to the death of Mr J. S. McLeod, President of the New Zealand Racing Association. A feature of the meeting was the performance of W. J. Broughton, who, out of six mounts, rode four firsts, a second and a third. The totalisator showed a decrease of £5145 on the first day compared with last year, being £18,614 10s as against £23,759 10s last year. Despite the increase in attendance yesterday the machine showed a decrease of £3120 10s compared with the corresponding day last year, being £23,108 as against £26,228 10s last year. The total for the meeting was £41,722 10s compared with £49,988 last year, being a decrease of £8265 10s. The meeting was excellently managed, and a special word of praise is due to the secretary, Mr N. C. C. Shepherd, who again demonstrated his ability in connection with the office which he holds. Just before the third to last race yesterday an alarm was raised that the stewards’ stand was on fire. The fire was extinguished before much damage was done. The cause of the outbreak is said to have been a lighted cigarette carelessly thrown down. The results were as follow: — FIRST DAY. Waiohine Stakes, 6f: 2 Newbury Queen, 8.7 (W.
