CARTERTON

FOUND DEAD WELL KNOWN RESIDENT. ("Times-Age” Special.) Early on New Year's morning the police were informed that a local resident, Mr William Ernest Houghton, more familiarly known as “Bill the Fainter," had been found lying dead in the doorway of the shop of E. H. Hawker and Son. He was last seen alive the pievious evening by several persons and seemed to be quite well. Shortly after one o'clock a resident passed the shop where Mr Houghton was lying and thought he was sleeping. Early on Monday morning Mr Albert Rayner passed the shop and found Mr Houghton lying near the doorway dead. The matter was reported to the police. A doctor pronounced death to have been due to natural causes. The late Mr Houghton was a well known figure in Carterton where he has resided for many years. He was a painter by occupation and was born in Birmingham, England, on February 16, 1862. As far as is known he has no relatives in New Zealand. He was a returned soldier, having served in the Boer War. Deceased was buried at Clareville Cemetery today, being accorded a Returned Soldiers' funeral. BOWLING CARTERTON CLUB GAMES. On Saturday last on the Carterton green the following games were played: — Hawker, Harrington, Thompson, Tucker (s) beat B. Booth, Clarke, Underhill, G. Hart (s), 24/23; Kilmister, Robertson, J. G. Stevens, Martin (s) beat Newbould. W. Hart, Beale, Hughan (s), 23/21; Nunn, Savill, Harris, Stent (s) beat Campbell, Hill, Barr, Simmonds (s), 22/20. Mt. Holdsworth Popular. The glorious weather prevailing over the holidays induced many people to make the journey to Mt. Holdsworth. Alleged Traffic Breaches. It is understood that several persons will be brought before the Magistrate’s Court on alleged breaches of the traffic regulations, including alleged drunkenness while in charge of a motor car. Passing of the Old Year. The seeing of the old year out and the new year in passed quietly in Carterton. Other than playing on the bagpipes and the sound of motor horns and similar noises there was no demonstration. Mail Service. On page one of this issue, Mr Ben Sewell notifies the Carterton public that he has taken over the mail service between the Carterton railway station and the Post Office previous carried by Mr F. W. Jackson. A light truck will meet every train, and the carriage of parcels and goods entrusted to Mr Sewell will receive prompt attention at reasonable charges. Vital Statistics. There were seven births, four deaths, and four marriages registered at Carterton during December. The figures for the quarter were: births 25, marriages seven, deaths 10. those for the corresponding quarter in 1938 being 23, nine and six. Convicted of Drunkenness. A first offender was brought before Mr H. M. Trapp, J.P., at the Carterton S.M. Court this morning and was convicted. He was also charged with having been intoxicated while in charge of a motor car and was remanded till ■January 24.
