DUNEDIN RACES
CHIEF EVENT TO SOVEREIGN LADY. TRACK RECORDS BROKEN. DUNEDIN, December 23. The Dunedin Jockey Chib's summer meeting opened in fine weather and attracted a fair attendance. The totalisator handled £18.761. but no comparison with last year is possible, as then the first day was Boxing Day. The going was on the hard side and fast times were recorded. Last Link and Spanish Lad both created fresh track records. Sovereign Lady won the Otago Handicap. in meritorious style. She was allowed to set. her own pace in front of the field, while most of the lightweights were bunched in the ruck. Norseman, Sailing Lady. Mona s Song. Alma and Second Innings were running handy with leaders, but Thei midor, Peony Rose and Knight Commander never emerged from the the ruck. In the run home Sovereign Lady stalled off challenges from Norseman and Mona’s Song and won in good style. Knight Commander was last away and got a bad run all through the race. Kilrobe was a certainty beaten in the Federal Handicap because of her fractiousness at the post. She lost about four lengths in standing flatfooted at the rise of the barrier, and after coming round the field just failed by a short head to beat Spanish Lad, who a 71b allowance and practically led all the way. Gay Fox Wins Nicely. Prime Quality, a solid favourite for the Highweight Handicap at the Manawatu meeting on Saturday, looked unlucky to lose as he drifted a long way back early and with only half a mile to go was still 15 to 20 lengths behind. He put in a solid run home but just failed to get up. The Masterton horse. Gay Fox, was splendidly ridden by his trainer. A. Jenkins, being in be-' hind the leading bunch throughout and making his run to win nicely. Hunting Lore, restrained in behind early, shot to the front with a clear lead entering the straight but he just weakened again at the death. Du Maurier's Easy Win. Seldom is an important event won so easily as Du Maurier scored in the Manawatu Cup on Saturday. Yet he won on his merits. Always prominent he was restrained in behind the two leaders Raeburn and Limbohm. having Centrepoise and Dainty Sue alongside him, but about the five furlongs 'he was given his head and he very ' quickly ran to the front. He increased his lead round the home turn to about five lengths and there was never a hope for any of the others after that and he won with plenty in hand from Tidewaiter, who had followed him up to the front. Tidewaiter rain a greatly improved race on recent form and just as easily hold his place lor second, but he never had a chance of winning. Friesland came along witli a solid run into third money al the end. and old Hunting Cat was a good fourth. FIXTURES. December 27- Manawatu. December 27--Taranaki. December 28, January 1. 2 —Auckland.
