CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Manawatu Cup Won Easily by Du Maurier SOVEREIGN LADY SCORES IN OTAGO HANDICAP (BY “CARBINE.”) At the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday the Auckland horse Du Maurier scored an easy win in the Manawatu Cup. Once given his head the Surveyor gelding quickly went to the front and the rest of the field never had a chance of catching him. The favourite, Siegmuno, and Centrepoise ran disappointing races. At Dunedin Sovereign Lady ran exceptionally well to win the Otago Handicap, leading all the way and stalling off challenges by Norseman and Mona’s Song. During the afternoon track records were broken by Spanish Lad ana Last Link.
MANAWATU MEETING
CUP WON BY DU MAURIER. DUNCANNON WINS SPRINT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ December 25. Keen racing with some very close finishes featured the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting at Awapuni on Saturday. The principal event, the Manawatu Cup, was won by the Auckland owned gelding Du Maurier, who joined L. Knapp's Awapuni stable some time back, and has since developed excellent form. Du Maurier’s win was one of the easiest recorded in the history of the race. The weather was fine and warm with a cool westerly breeze, and there was a very large attendance. Due, however, to a hold up of money as the result of an inquiry into the running of the Nursery Handicap, the totalisator turnover showed a slight decrease on last year's first day, the figures being £35,965, a decrease of £694. The track was in excellent order though a trifle firm, and the going was fast. An inquiry into interference met with by Air Flight just after the start of the Nursery Handicap was held. It was found that there was interference but the evidence was insufficient to place the blame and justify action. Mr B. N. Sandilands was the stipendiary steward.
