GOOD CHRISTMAS
♦ TRADE WELL MAINTAINED IN AUSTRALIA. GOODS OF LOCAL MANUFACTURE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY. December 25. Christmas shopping in spite of the war and other unsettling influences was well up to the standard of previous years throughout Australia. Traders had to do without many imported luxury lines, but. this did not worry customers, who found ample substitutes for Yuletide of local manufacture, which received a splendid impetus. Heavy spending also occurred by soldiers on short Christmas leave. Thousands of holiday-makers who have hitherto gone on sea cruises this year were compelled to spend the holidays within their own State, this resuulting in extra heavy bookings for all country seaside resorts, but there was some restriction on motor travel because of increased costs of petrol and tyres.
