MASTERTON REBUKED
POOR ATTENDANCE at civic FAREWELL. MANY VOICES OF REGRET. . “I am disgusted with the people of Masterton.” said the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, this morning, referring to the poor attendance at the civic farewell to men of the First Echelon, held in the Opera House last night. The house was not much more than half full. Mr Jordan added that the picture theatres appeared to have been well patronised. Many others among those who attended the farewell expressed similar views. “Masterton ought to be ashamed of itself,” said a returned soldier on leaving the hall. “It is a terrible state of affairs,” said another this morning. “Masterton disgraced itself last nigh.. It is a slight on the Mayor and everyone else, and is no encouragement to Mr Jordan at all.” A nurse with war experience said: “I could not believe my eyes. I could hardly sleep last night for thinking about it,"
