AMATEUR ATHLETICS
MASTERION CLUB’S MEETING LAST NIGHT'S RESULTS. EXCITING CONTESTS WITNESSED. Owing to the holiday period attendances were not up to the usual at the Masterton Amateur Athletic Meeting last night, though the races, especially those in the junior section proved rather exciting. Last night’s meeting was the final for this year, and with the membership as it is the club has every reason to look forward to a bright New Year. The hurdlers will be seen in action in 1940, and the club is making every endeavour to revive this branch of athletics. With hurdlers of the calibre of W. A. C. Pullar and the veteran W. Grantham, coaching, the boys should improve with every run. Pullar won the New Zealand championship 440 yards hurdles in 1934, equalling the then New Zealand record. W. Grantham broke 16 seconds for the 120 yards high hurdles when he was in his twenties, and old-timers will remember the duels between. H. Wilson and W. Candy. Grantham also holds the Country Club's 120 yards hurdles championship. During the weekend several members made a trip to the night meeting held at Palmerston North, the most successful competitor being D. Stratton, who won his heat in the 100 yards handicap, and was placed second in the final. In the 220 yards handicap he won both his heat and the final. Of the cyclists K. Woollett rode well to gain a place in his heat of the one mile cycle handicap, and finished well up in the final. The first race of last night’s programme was the senior 100 yards handicap, which resulted in a win for J. Polson, who is showing a return of form. D. Stratton ran a good race to gain second place, from W. Edwards, who is running very well. G. McCormick, with a liberal handicap made no race of the first heat of the 220 yards junior handicap, winning easily from H. Hayes and J. Heaven.
In the second heat A. Reid ran with sound judgment over the last 50 yards to head off a spirited finish by M. Doyle. S. Faulknor, the third man, was well back at the start, and failed to come through over the last few yards. Of the starters in the i’-mile handicap, R. Wyeth ran his best race to date, winning with plenty to spare from Pullar in fast time. M. Sellar was running well, but was forced to retire after half a mile. He was affected by a heavy cold. .
