Major-General Sir Eugene Fiset has been appointed Liuetenant-Governor of Quebec an Ottawa cablegram states. Members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society assembled last evening to farewell Sergt. R. Johnston, who is a member of the First Echelon and is on final leave. A presentation was made on behalf of members, accompanied by the best wishes of all. Appointments to the advisory council of scientific and industrial research are announced in the Gazette published last evening. They are: Professor H. G. Denham (chairman), Dr J. C. Andrews, Mr A. H. Cockayne, Mr G. A ; Pascoe, Dr R. O. Page, Sir Theodore Rigg, Mr J. M. Ranstead, and Professor W. Riddet.
Mr George Henry Curtis Hart, whose death occurred at Geytown on Monday was born in Wellington on February 18, 1851. His father, who was a printer on the first newspaper published in Wellington, arrived in the Dominion in the early forties. His mother was a Miss Houghton, who before her marriage, was engaged as a light-house keeper on Somes Island. In the early days, the late Mr Hart carried the mail between Wairoa and Napier. He was also engaged as a bullock-driver on stations in the Pongaroa district and in 1900 took up a property at Haunui, with his son, Mr G. C. Hart, a returned soldier who is the only surviving son.
Mr George Murch. Wanganui Town Clerk, who will retire on Friday, was officially farewelled by the city council on Tuesday. The gathering was attended by three former mayors, Messrs A. G. Bignell. Hope Gibbons and N. G. Armstrong. The mayor. Mr Rogers, extolled the long and faithful service given by Mr. Murch to the city. Mr Rogers said he had been associated with Mr Murch in four terms of office, and he paid a tribute to the great local body knowledge possessed by Mr Murch. He presented Mr Murch with a gold wristlet watch and a silver-mounted cigarette case. Mi’ Murch was appointed town clerk in 1905 and has held that position ever since. Mr C. R. White will succeed Mr Murch as town clerk.
Recent ordinations to the priesthood in the Church of St Mary of the Angels were those of the Rev Joseph Leahy, son of Mrs and the late Mr D. Leahy, Opunake, and the Rev John Dunn, son of Mr and Mrs S. Dunn. Wellington. The Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan of New Zealand, Archbishop O'Shea, officiated at the ceremony, and was assisted by Monsignor Connelly and the Rev Dr Geancy. The Rev Father Dignan was master of ceremonies. Father Leahy was assisted by the Rev Father BarrBrown. and Father Dunn by the Rev Father Higgins. They were sponsored by some 20 priests from surround, ing parishes. After the ceremony, the newly-ordained priests gave their first blessing to their relatives and friends.
