ORDER OF FORESTERS ELECTION OF OFFICERS. r (“Times-Age” Special.) The Chief Ranger. Bro N. Jensen, presided over an excellent attendance of members of Court Makakahi at the monthly meeting on Monday night. It was decided to recommend January 27 as the night on which to play for the Card Shield. This competition is held quarterly between Courts Loyal Enterprise, Kopuaranga, Loyal Carterton and Loyal Makakahi. J.W. Bro S. Daniel was appointed to arrange for a team to represent the Court. Several members were granted a donation to augment their sick pay for the Christmas period. The election of officers resulted as follows:—l.P.C.R.. Bro N. Jensen; C.R., Bro J. Fargher; S.C.R., Bro P. Fauvel; S.W., Bro S. Daniel; J.W., Bro J. Booth; 5.8., Bro H. Leslie; J. 8., Bro P. Jensen; secretary, Bro O. Walton; treasurer, Bro H. P. Hansen. Bros R. Gyde and J. Ammundsen conducted the installation ceremony. It was decided to hold an old members’ reunion at the March meeting. Bro S. Daniel was appointed delegate to represent the Court at the Triennial Conference at Wellington. Advantage was taken of the presence of Bro R. Anderson, who is on final leave, to present to him his P.C.R. sash and certificate. The C.R. extended Christmas greetings to the officers and members.

After the lodge meeting an enjoyable social hour was spent.

CHRISTMAS TREE ENJOYABLE GATHERING. The members of the local Druids’ and Foresters’ Lodges and the Fire Brigade, with their wives and children, assembled at the Oddfellows’ Hall last night to welcome Father Christmas. The attendance was large and the gathering was a happy one for all. Several of the children entertained the parents with songs and recitations, all the items being encored. Several games were also played. On his arrival Father Christmas was greeted with musical honours and a hearty cheer. He was welcomed by Bro S. Daniel on behalf of the committee and the parents. After a brief reply Father Christmas handed to each child a suitable gift from an attractively decorated tree. The next person in popular demand was Mr Ice Cream Man who was kept busy satisfying the wants of the youngsters. Then soft drinks and bags of sweets were distributed. A short community sing was held. Mr R. Holford presided at the piano and Mr Harold Baillie led the singing. Supper was partaken of by the adults, after which the happy gathering was brought to a close. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs H. Baillie, Newman Road, intend visiting Nelson for Christmas. Mrs R. Holford is visiting relatives at Hunterville. Miss Grace Gallagher, who has been an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital, has now returned home. Mr Charles Poulsen, well known as a nurseryman at Papanui, and later at Styx for many years, who died on Saturday, aged 87, was known to many residents of Eketahuna. Mr .Poulsen, who was a native of Denmark, came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Gothenberg in the early seventies, and spent the first years of residence in the colony with a survey party on Banks Peninsula. After moving to Christchurch, Mr Poulsen began in business as a nurseryman, and built up a considerable connection in Christchurch. The business was later moved to Styx, Mr Poulsen selling out about 16 years ago. Since then he had lived in retirement at Papanui. He* had been a member of the Sons and Daughters of Temperance Lodge, Elim Division, St Albans, for more than 50 years. Mrs Poulsen, who was a native of Sweden, came to New Zealand on the same vessel as Mr Poulsen, died about 22 years ago. Mr Poulsen is survived by two daughters, Mesdames W. Robinson (Papanui). and S. E. Jones (Spreydon), and four sons. There are also surviving a brother and sister, Mr Christian Poulsen (Belfast) and Mrs Petersen (Eketahuna). both of whomare considerably more than 80 years of age. A Hot Day. One of the hottest days so far this summer was experienced in Eketahuna yesterday. Road Sealing Completed. The sealing of the deviation at the Newman Road railway bridge has now been completed. Harvesting Under Way. With the advent of the more settled weather conditions, harvesting of hay crops is proceeding apace. It is understood that labour is difficult to obtain for this class of work. Shearing is also being accelerated and local carriers are being kept busy removing wool clips to the slation.

At the conclusion of the inquest at Invercargill into the deaths of James Thomas Nelson and George Joseph Sheedy, who lost their lives through falling from a moving troop train at Edendale on December 14 when bidding farewell to an officer, the.coroner, Mr Abernethy, found that both died as the result of multiple injuries from falling under a train.
