GREYTOWN BOROUGH

MEETING OP COUNCIL BAND INSTRUMENTS TO BE SOLD. STREET WIDENING PROPOSAL. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Mr A. W. Horton (Mayor), Councillors W. A. Tate, I. Blissett. H. J. Nightingale, II C. Trotman. F. Wood., H. J. Farley, ano E. .Balfour. In reply to a question by Councillor Nightingale as to the extention of the water mains at the hospital. Councillor Farley stated that at the present time funds would not permit of thu being carried out. The poundkeeper’s report for November stated that no stock had been impounded. The council agreed to the proposal t< leave the coloured lights in the Mair, Street till after the Centennial celebrations on February 17. Messrs Thompson and Tate forwarded a deed of trust as drawn up on January 20, 1921, between the Greytown Band and Borough Council, vesting the instruments and music in the Borough Council. The deed gave the council power t< sell the instruments if no band existed for two years. The money derived from the sale was. to be held in a trust fund until such lime as another banc was formed.

Mr H. T. Rees explained that since the deed had been drawn up. some ol the old instruments had been sold ant replaced by better ones. Mr Rees further stated that conditions were vert different now. and the prospect of forming a band was very remote. Mi Rees said that some of the instruments wei e very good. The Mayor thanked Mr Rees for the information given. After a discussion it was decided tc sell the instruments if a satisfactory offer was received;

The Mayor and Town Clerk were appointed to deal with the matter. The Social Security department wrote in respect to men employed under Scheme 13. It was decided to grant the holidays as set out in the award, three days. The Greytown Trust Lands wrote agreeing to dedicating land 101 street widening. It was resolved that the borough solicitors be instructed to proceed with the arrangements. The minister of the Grey town Methodist Church invited the council to attend a service in the Methodist Church on February 18, 1940. The invitation was accepted. The Railways Department wrote stating that it was not prepared to run an evening train to Greytown from Wellington during the Centennial Exhibition.

Messrs Thompson and Tate wrote in regard to a dosing order relative to properties in Main Street, stating that an appeal would go before a Magistrate. The City Clerk, Wellington, wrote stating that the dog-catcher in Wellington only used a slip noose for this purpose. The Borough Council decided to defer the matter of any alteration to the present system for twelve months. Mr H. W. Jordan was appointed dog registrar. The registration fees are to be: Sheep and cattle dogs. 2s 6d, all other dogs, 10s; all plus Is for antihydatid medicine. A resolution was passed declaung Saturday, February 17, a public holiday in connection with the official opening of the Centennial Rest Room and pageant. , The matter of a clean-up week was left to the chairman of the Works Committee to arrange. Councillor Trotman asked what were the regulations governing campers., at Memorial Park. At the present time no charge was made and some campets stayed at the Park for a period of « weeks. It was stated that before a charge could be made a permanent caretaker would have to be appointed. The borough office is to close fiom December 24 to January 8. 1940. The next meeting of the council will be held on February 19.
