FISHING EXCELLENT
WAIRARAPA AND PAHIATUA RIVERS. DISTRIBUTION OF YEARLINGS AND FRY. Trout fishing in the Wairarapa is described as the best for - some years, while in the Pahiatua area it has never been better. This satisfactory position is due, it is stated, to there having been few really big floods in the past two seasons. Floods prove most destructive to trout and if the river flow could be stabilised there would be a much larger trout population, it is stated by those who speak with authority. Catches in the Ruamahanga River include 411 b. and 31b. fish. An angler in the Pahiatua district who is not particularly well versed in the art, states that this season he is always able to secure a fish, whenever he goes out, a feat which he had never been able to accomplish in other seasons. During the holiday season, the Makuri is a most popular stream and in common with other rivers in the district, is fishing particularly well. Anglers in the Wairarapa have every reason to be well satisfied with the position this season. If the weather remains fine, there should be many contented and happy anglers in the district. Altogether, about 1,500,000 fry have been distributed in Wellington district rivers and of that number about 70,000 have been allocated to the Wairarapa, though the greater portion of the allocation has been placed in the yearling ponds. Sixty thousand yearlings have been distributed in district rivers from these ponds this season.
