RIFLE SHOOTING PETONE TEAMS DEFEATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) On the Featherston range on Saturday two teams from the Petone Rifle Club were defeated. The scores were as follow: — FEATHERSTON.

Farewell to Soldiers. On Saturday night the Featherston Branch of the Returned Soldiers Association tendered a farewell to the local soldiers, who will shortly leave for overseas. Several Masterton members were present. Mr R. Whyborn (president), occupied the chair. During the evening songs were given by Mr W. Mann. The chalk sketches by Mr Price were very cleverly done. The soldiers entertained were Denny Carlyon, Harry Piper, Norman Neill, Ben Robinson and John Browne. Seaman Allan Raper, who is spending a few days’ leave with his parents, was invited to the function. Mr Robbins in proposing the health of the Army and Navy briefly touched on the gallant fight of the Achilles. Mr Harry Piper on behalf of the Army and Navy, very suitably replied. An interesting address by Dr G. S. Sharp of some of his wartime experiences was also a features of the evening. A happy gathering terminated with the singing of "For they are jolly good fellows.” Mr Joe Buck was the pianist. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs J. E. Willett and family are spending a few days at Castlepoint. Graham Harkness, who was operated on for appendicitis in Greytown Hospital on Saturday, is reported to be making good progress towards recovery.
BOY SCOUTS PARENTS’ NIGHT. The final Boy Scout meeting for the year was held in the scout den when the cups and badges were presented by the Scoutmaster, Mr G. Harkness. The cup for the best patrol was won by the Cuckoo Patrol, and the shield for the best scout by Patrolleader D. S. Johnston. A sing-song round the camp fire and items on the piano-accordion by Mr P. Clark, were followed by the serving of supper The singing of “Taps” concluded a happy gathering. Comforts for Soldiers. The Featherston branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society has received an urgent appeal from the Red Cross headquarters for comforts for soldiers. Old linen, flannelette, bed jackets, socks, sweets, cocoa, glucose, butter. biscuits, raisins, splints and bandages are required. The local branch decided to spend £5 in comforts. Donations would be gratefully accepted and could be left with or sent to the president, Mrs G. S. Sharp. Cricket Match. A match was played between Featherston and Cross Creek yesterday at Cross Creek in perfect weather, Cross Creek winning by 40 runs.
