MEETING OF WAiRARAPA P. & A. SOCIETY MR W. F. ROYDHOUSE’S DEATH. SCHOOL GARDEN COMPETITION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa P. & A. Society was held in Carterton this morning. In the absence of the president, Mr R. R. Tilson. Mr M. McLeod presided. There were present: Messrs J. H. McLeod, McGillicuddy, O. L. Robinson, H. Rayner, Candy, Seivers, Hamilton and Morrison. A number of apologies for absence were received. The secretary, Mr L. H. Smart, submitted a financial report prepared by the Treasurer. Mr G. Brown, showing a credit balance of .£B6l 5s 3d made up as follows: —Credit balance at Bank of New Zealand, £295 7s lid; credit balance at P.O. Savings Bank, £565 17s 4d; total, £B6l 5s 3d. Receipts since last meeting totalled £523 4s 11 d. Accounts for £144 4s lOd were passed. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr W. F. Roydhouse, members standing in silence as a mark of respect. Mr Smart referred in feeling terms to the loss sustained by the society in the death of Mr Roydhouse, who was the oldest member of the society. Mr Roydhouse had mentioned to him that he had printed the first show catalogue when the society’s shows were held at Tauherenikau. The catalogue was sent in sections on horseback to the grounds until it was completed. The late Mr Roydhouse had been connected with everything which was for the benefit of the district, and would be greatly missed by Ihe whole community, said Mr Smart. The Carterton Borough Council wrote notifying the society in reply to its application for a rebate on the ordinary water rates that it had decided to make a rebate of £5. It was decided that a letter of thanks be sent to the council for its action. Mr W. A. Todd (Otane) wrote congratulating the society on the management of the stock section at the recent Centennial Show.
An appeal for a donation to the Carterton and South Wairarapa District Centennial Memorial Fund was received from the Mayor of Carterton. Mr D. L. Taverner. The letter was received. Mr L. Robinson, judge of the society’s school garden competition, open to all primary schools in the South Wairarapa submitted his- awards as follow:--Best all round school garden: Clareville, 39 points, 1: Gladstone. 78 points. 2; South Featherston, 76 points. 3. Best vegetable or farm plot at each school: Gladstone. C. Haeata and S. Reiri, 1; P. Hutara and Helen Haeata. 2; F. E. Hadfield and Jane Namana, 3. Clareville, Leslie Rzoska, 1: W. Hannah. 2: W. Morris, 3. South Featherston. John Simmonds and David Radcliffe, 1; Bobby Burt and Janies Thompson, 2; Clive Thorne and Trevor Snell, 3. Best, flower plot: Clareville schoc*, Coral Bishop. 1: Cioria Kempton. 2; Melva Nicholls and B. Rud. 3. Championship, individual plot: C. Haeata and S. Reiri. Gladstone. 87 points, 1: L. Rzoska. Clarcville. 85 points. 2. "I have to record a general improve-, ment in the schools judged. It is to be regretted, however, that more schools do not avail themselves of the generous prizes given in this competition." staled Mr Robinson in hi: report.
